ContourGlobal Completes Black Hollow Sun Solar Project in Colorado
ContourGlobal and Platte River Power Authority have finalized the Black Hollow Sun solar project near Severance, Colorado, which will generate about 608 GWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power over 73,000 homes. This project highlights advancements in renewable energy infrastructure and clean energy generation.

ContourGlobal and Platte River Power Authority have completed the second phase of the Black Hollow Sun solar project near Severance, Colorado. This milestone brings the facility to its full capacity of 324 MWp (257 MWac), allowing it to generate approximately 608 GWh of clean electricity every year. This output is expected to power more than 73,000 homes, making it a major component of the region's renewable energy infrastructure.
The Black Hollow Sun project reflects a steady transition toward sustainable energy solutions and away from traditional fossil fuels. Developed through a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Platte River, the facility was designed to improve the long-term sustainability of the Colorado energy supply. Hanwha Qcells managed the project’s development as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor.
As renewable energy becomes a higher priority globally, projects of this scale are becoming central to achieving cleaner energy results. Producing 608 GWh of clean electricity annually helps meet local energy requirements while supporting broader environmental objectives, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the promotion of more sustainable energy management.
The successful completion of the site serves as a practical example of how large-scale solar initiatives can function effectively. It shows the capacity for solar power to meet a significant portion of energy demand, particularly in regions well-suited for solar collection. By capturing solar energy at this scale, the Black Hollow Sun project demonstrates how renewables can be used to meet the specific needs of local communities.
The progress made at Black Hollow Sun establishes a clear path for future renewable energy developments. As more projects are launched, the experience gained here will help shape strategies for generating solar power and integrating it into the wider grid. This facility improves local energy resilience and supports the ongoing shift toward cleaner, more sustainable power sources.
