Kerala Launches Two AI Centres of Excellence
On October 12, 2026, the Kerala government launched two Artificial Intelligence Centres of Excellence in collaboration with the IndiaAI Mission. These centres aim to foster AI-driven research and startup development in biotechnology and digital innovation.

On October 12, 2026, the Kerala government officially launched two Artificial Intelligence Centres of Excellence (AI-CoEs) in collaboration with the IndiaAI Mission and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Strategically located at the Kerala Startup Mission in Kochi and Digital University Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram, these centres have received administrative approval under the Startup Financing Pillar of the IndiaAI Mission, with a total allocation of INR 20 crore for each centre. Their primary objective is to drive research and development in AI, particularly in biotechnology, genomics, drug discovery, data science, and digital innovation. The establishment of these centres represents a significant step in Kerala's journey toward becoming a hub for advanced technology and innovation.
The Bio-AI centre in Kochi, themed “Nature Meets Compute,” aims to integrate the state’s rich biodiversity and traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with AI technologies. This centre will leverage the capabilities of the ‘Tejaswi’ supercomputer at Cochin University of Science and Technology, along with the Kerala Genome Data Centre for research and computational support. The initiative will benefit from a structured funding model involving contributions from MeitY, the state government, and an industry consortium, ensuring a solid financial foundation for its operations. Key stakeholders in this project include the Kerala government, MeitY, and various industry partners, such as Synthite Industries and Plant Lipids.
The Bio-AI CoE is expected to incubate around 48 deep-tech startups over four annual cohorts. Additionally, it aims to create approximately 600 high-value jobs and train around 1,200 professionals in bioinformatics. This focus on practical applications of AI is crucial for fostering a vibrant startup ecosystem capable of addressing real-world challenges in healthcare and agriculture. The broader economic implications of these AI centres are significant. By promoting innovation and entrepreneurship, the centres are expected to enhance Kerala's position in the global tech landscape. Their emphasis on applied AI research and startup incubation will stimulate local economies and attract investments and talent to the region.
The successful implementation of these initiatives could lead to advancements in various sectors, contributing to sustainable development and improving the quality of life for residents. Looking ahead, the Kerala government envisions expanding these AI initiatives to further integrate AI solutions across different sectors. The establishment of the two AI-CoEs is just the beginning of a broader strategy to position Kerala as a leader in AI research and applications. This initiative not only contributes to India's national AI mission but also serves as a model for other states aiming to develop their own AI ecosystems, ensuring that Kerala remains at the forefront of technological innovation.
